7 Sites for Tracking #IranElection
As many of you know, I’ve been keeping close tabs on the #IranElection aftermath as both a one who studies international politics as well as a technologist and social media pundit. A lot of hay has been made about the role that Twitter has played in allowing the citizens of Iran to self-report what’s going on in Tehran as they protest for an election recount.
What’s difficult is finding out exactly what everything means, and finding signal in the noise. I’ve come across a number of memetrackers and tools over the last several days that help bring signal back to the noise.
Twazzup – http://iran.twazzup.com
This was the first tool I discovered, and has been a great standby and fall-back when I’m looking for more source material, be it multimedia collateral or images of what’s going on in the many marches and protests.
It’s also a useful tool to watch continuously for an hour or two – you get a feel for who the recurring sources on Twitter are, and what is a reputable rumor (and what’s probably speculation or disinformation).
Memeorandum – http://memeorandum.com
One of the criticisms that CNN leveled back at us in the #CNNfail crowd was that there was no perspective on the issues. If you want full length perspective from New Media sources, this is it.
Spinn3r – http://iranelection.org/
It’s a barebones website, but it tracks most discussed postings, images, and video from a variety of websites – not simply Twitter. Since Friendfeed is one of the most highly used social networks in the middle east, this is a good thing for a different type of discussion.
Twitter Search – http://search.twitter.com
If you want the very basics, though it isn’t the best way to do it, Twitter’s own search engine is useful for getting a snapshot of what’s being talked about.
Tweetmeme – http://tweetmeme.com/?category=worldbusiness-politicalnews
Following Tweetmeme’s political news category gives an idea of what’s uber-popular right now. Here’s a hint – right now, it’s mostly Iran.
Searchme – http://www.searchme.com/#/&q=iran%20election&vs=images
– http://www.searchme.com/#/&q=iran%20election&vs=video
Searchme has been a great resource to hit up once a day at least to find the latest images and videos from a different perspective than I’m able to find from any of the other memetrackers available.
Friendfeed: Iranwatch Group – http://friendfeed.com/iranwatch
Keith, aka Tsudonim, on Friendfeed, has set up a curated list of the most interesting and vetted bits of news coming across social media with regard to Iran.
