End of an Era: XKCD Commemorates Geocities Closed Down.

There really isn’t a lot to say on the topic (unless I were to wax philosophical on the transient nature of data on the web) about the impending closure of Geocities. Those of us who were around in the mid-90s either remember those days fondly or are still trying to scrub the scads of bad design aesthetics out of our memory (or most likely a little bit of both).

In case you’ve all but forgotten what all that looks like, maths-geek webcomic XKCD has re-skinned their site to be the perfect replica of the Geocities era web page.

Broken graphics, visible tables, old school arrows, and “under construction.”

Blink tags, visible web “hit” counters, web rings, animated gifs, and ads for x10 spy cameras.

We’ll miss you, Geocities. At least I will.
