TweetUp Acquires Twidroid, Still Room for Twitter Market Growth

TweetUp is taking all of Twitter’s heeding to heart, acquiring Twidroid and announcing its plans to buy popurls as well. The Twitter search and bidding tool has already created a service on top of Twitter, running on multiple Twitter apps. With the inclusion of a mobile app and URL-shortener, TweetUp is going the way of Twitter itself.

And why not? The microblog has had countless apps created on its platform, with Twitter only recently gaining more complete control of its access points and interactions. This move by Twitter has diminished the significance of several Twitter apps, forcing them all to rethink their approach to microblogging and marketing.

TweetUp, which has also changed Twidroid’s name to Twidroyd, is taking its platform approach and applying it in a more widespread manner to its core offerings. Layering in more tools to complete the services it provides, TweetUp is being rather proactive in light of all Twitter’s done to own its self-perpetuating market. PCWorld details more of the acquisition goals;

TweetUp also said that it would acquire popurls, a site that aggregates popular items from The New York Times, Twitter, Digg, Delicious, Reddit, YouTube, Flickr and other news and social media sites. “Combined, Twidroid and popurls will provide TweetUp with a broad distribution network on which to test and refine its platform for finding the world’s best tweeters.,” TweetUp said.

As far as marketing goes, TweetUp is clearly looking for rapid expansion. Incorporating multiple aggregation and distribution tools, search and filtering options, TweetUp is creating a one-stop shop. With the name change, TweetUp may also be looking to use the popular service beyond its association with Android’s platform, even as the acquisition helps to validate Google’s mobile platform.

This also is encouraging to those developers that haven’t been able to curb the oncoming takeover of Twitter, as those services with more resources will look to the existing subsystem to stay afloat. Creating usable services that overlay what Twitter already provides has been the bread and butter of many developers these past two years, and the coming year will demonstrate the importance of those focused on marketing, privacy and productivity around Twitter.
