HP Leads Rising PC Sales, Convergance through the Cloud
You may have an iPad, the iPhone 4 and a random Android device, but there are still a lot of folks still buying PCs. A report released from Gartner today shows 21% increase in PC sales for the second quarter of 2010, with HP, Dell and Acer leading the pack.
Worldwide PC shipments reached 82.9 million in Q2, over 20% higher than results from sales in 2009 during the same time. These findings are slightly above Gartner’s earlier projections of 19.3% growth.
The report goes on to show the progress of the PC market, which has had ongoing improvement for the third consecutive quarter, with double-digit growth on a year-over-year basis.
Perhaps it’s the declining average selling prices that’s encouraged the consumer market, which increased its spending about 13% in the second quarter. The computers of most interest were the mini-notebooks, though their growth is slowing down compared to the last two years.
The interest in tablets has likely taken a bite out of mini-notebook sales, with even the leading manufacturers looking to the tablet market to continue to drive overall sales. HP has actually declined in professional mobile growth across many countries, while the company fluctuates between Android, Windows 7 and Palm for powering its tablet push.
Dell is an early partner of Microsoft Azure’s cloud-computing initiative, making a strong case for the two brands. And while such partnerships, failed or flourishing, are largely affecting the overall PC market, there are several other factors involved.
Cloud-computing may be driving the need for mobile devices, but their PC can provide wired (or wireless) access to the cloud as well. Whether you’re social networking or writing a business proposal, the cloud creating more demand for plugging in.
Here at SiliconANGLE, we call this convergence—there’s a current tsunami of new technologies, products and services, addressing the needs of businesses and consumers. The Internet’s influence on consumer products has never been more evident, with rising PC sales indicating the long reach of electronics.
Businesses in particular are helping to keep PC sales afloat, with the yearly refresh cycle bringing in a new wave of purchases. Garnter points out the business demand around PCs, despite many budget deficits, with expectations for business-related sales to increase in the second half of 2010.
