Digital Archeology & Cyber Anthropology – Where Science Really Meets Society

altGoing back to the roots of the web and the days without flat-screen monitors is now more than just an interesting prospect, as the Digital Archeology exhibit taking place in London, UK and curated by Jim Boulton dives into the history of the web.

“It [the exhibition] consists of conversations with key players from the early years of the Web as well as more hands-on elements. Those include old computers set up to access the material.”

The exhibition’s value sums up at more than just nostalgia, as our editor Mark “Rizzn” Hopkins said:

“This practice directly relates to user experience design. Knowing where we came from in terms of web user experience, and how those systems evolved, lets us know how to plan for future community development.”

Going back to our cyber-roots and examining the ‘cyber society‘ is quiet a trend nowadays, as a healthy amount of individuals seem to recognize the value that lays in history, including thePlanet’s Dianna Martin:

“I met Diana Martin in the SxSWi Bloggers Lounge, a UX specialist for cloud hosting company thePlanet, who termed herself a ‘cyber-anthropologist,’” said Hopkins. “Her work delves even more deeply into  the field that the “Digital Archeology plays with.”

Examining the history of the online environment as well as the sociology of online users divided among various communities helps to make user experiences and working habits more efficient, as in addition to a text-book worthy tail, the Digital Archeology exhibit and the efforts Dianna Martin can be translated into current-day benefit.
