Mobile Advertising Trends Take on the Market
According to a recent report released by IDC also covered by SFGate, Google and Apple currently hold the largest share of the mobile ad market, which may be fairly obvious for some, especially in light of the companies’
recent acquisitions.
“But the mobile display ad market is still very fragmented, and no single company has more than 20% of the market, IDC says in a report. The mobile display ad market was about $390 million in 2010. Google had 19% share, Apple had 18.8% share, and Millennial Media had 15.4% share.
Apple’s share is particularly impressive because it only started iAds in the second half of the year.”
While Apple’s share may be impressive, Google does hold a staggering 91.4% of the $487.3 million mobile search advertising market. Nonetheless, Google is trying to increase its grip in market, which is predicted to reach $1.9 billion in 2011, which is exactly the reasoning behind its $750M acquisition of AdMob to grow its reach to display ads.
SiliconANGLE covered some of the other trends boiling in the mobile ad sector, including app advertising, in which Apple leads with a 25% market share. The app market is certainly a big one, but 60% of U.S users prefer mobile browsers rather than apps. This may just be an addition to mobile browsers’ eventual likelihood to outmatch apps in terms of efficiency, paving the way to yet another advertising trend.
