Sony’s New 3DTV Initiative and blinkx’s Boxee Invasion
MIPTV, in partnership with Sony Corporation, today announced the launch of a 3D content initiative gathering channel buyers, 3D content producers and MIPTV delegates in the name of superior 3DTV experience, dubbed as the “3DTV Broadcast Content Experience” . On the business side of the matter, it will bridge the gap between 3D content producers and 3D channels in order to deliver superior quality 3D programmes.
A selection process inviting 3D video content producers will be held, and their programs will be screened by acquisition executives such as 3net, a joint venture 3D television network backed by Sony Corporation, as well as Discovery Communications, IMAX Corporation and other leading acquirers from international 3D outlets. Furthermore, MIPTC will be hosting a string of 3D-centric conferences on April 6 which will be participated by producers, broadcasters, digital, mobile operators and hardware companies.
Apart from the 3D experience in online video, blinkx, the advanced video search service, is adding 35 million more hours to the ever expanding Boxee content base via an application that will be offered through Boxee’s App Library. Boxee amasses the best of internet content and locally stored media and delivers them to your living room via a user-interface that’s designed for to work well with TV and remote. Boxee is available for free download for Mac, Windows, and the D-Link Boxee Box itself.
“Boxee’s mission is to bring all the stuff people love watching on the Web onto their TVs in a way that makes sense and we’re thrilled to offer blinkx on our platform,” said Andrew Kippen, VP of Marketing for Boxee. “As watching video from the Internet on your TV becomes mainstream, the blinkx app will allow our users to easily discover and watch premium videos from the comfort of their own living room.”
Using Boxee, users will be able to watch their favorite online videos from their living room television, as well as take advantage of the Boxee’s QWERT remote. It allows users to find and download applications from popular entertainment channels such as Netflix, VUDU, Pandora, Flickr, and most recently, blinkx.
“The proliferation of Internet-enabled TVs and intelligent set-top boxes means viewers will soon be able to tap into the Web’s vast domain of video content directly from their televisions,” said Suranga Chandratillake, founder and CEO, blinkx. “The blinkx app, which combines our robust search technology with our massive index of online video, perfectly complements Boxee’s existing entertainment options and will further allow Boxee users to find, discover and enjoy the best that Internet video has to offer.”
Online video is so popular that there has been a substantial interest in the sector for investments and acquisition. One of the latest deals is Pixability, a manufacturer of video marketing software, which recently closed $1 million to make improvements around online video marketing and analysis. Chinese video company PPCLive closed $250 million from Softbank, an amount which no other Chinese company has raised to date. Cisco, on the other hand, is focusing heavily on home and office video services, acquiring Inlet Technologies to improve its video offerings.
