Comics Take on Android as Digital Publishing, Personal Cloud Grows Verticals

Comics were popular long before the dawn of the Kindle and iPad. But the literary genre is gaining new grounds, and market share, through just about every consumer device, including Android smartphones and tablets. Digital comics distributor Graphic.ly announced a brand new Android app fresh out of beta. Marking Graphic.ly’s first introduction to Android, the app offers users a library of over 2,000 comic books. “This milestone release marks Graphicly’s first entry to the growing and exciting Android marketplace and makes the more than 150 publishers currently available on Graphicly’s other applications available to a whole new audience.”

Among the 150 publishers are Marvel Comics, Archaia Entertainment, Archie Comics and BOOM! Studios. The app enables users to buy comics, as well as sync their current library across multiple platforms and share activities. This brings a social aspect to the app; the same element which put Mark Zuckerberg in brand new comic book out in stores today.

The Wall Street Journal reports a 48 page comic book titled “Mark Zuckerberg: Creator of Facebook” is available in stores as of today. The comic’s publisher, Bluewater Productions, said the book “a more balanced portrayal of Zuckerberg” than the movie: “The Social Network.”  The writer of the book, freelance journalist Jerome Maida, said that he ended up writing twice as much material than he anticipated, and revealed an interesting new twist to the story.

“…Maida said he did discover that Zuckerberg had to actually sneak into various dorm rooms in order to download the names and photographs of female residents during the night that he created Face Smash, the predecessor to Facebook.”

Comics are gaining more and more turf, with social media and mobile leading the way. This digital publishing trend is reaching into verticals, demonstrating the growing consumer power around personal cloud services, advanced distribution and emerging software marketplaces.
