Motorola Xoom Debut, Android Takes the Lead
After a decent wait, we have finally got the first impression and review of Motorola Xoom (Wi-Fi + 3G) Tablet from PC World. The review gives an overall score of 3.5 out of 5 points to the tablet and brings out almost every feature in a comprehensive manner. Starting with the pros, the very first point of attraction is the Honeycomb, that is, Android 3.0 Operating System, which gives a smooth tablet OS experience. As Honeycomb is an optimized OS for tablet use, it ensures an optimized tablet experience, quite evident from the home screens, the widgets, the music player, the browser, the e-mail, and the YouTube player.
Performance is really fast as it has best of the class ability to zip through content. It easily moves the heavy files including digital images within a minutes and even seconds. Even the transfer speed from USB is very impressive. Coming on the hardware, the overall design is classy and build sturdily. It owns a strong SIM tray that doubles up with MicroSD card slot cover. There is a 2-megapixel front facing camera, stereo speakers on the back and 5-megapixel flash.
Motorola Xoom runs on Tegra 2 platform along with dual-core 1GHz processor, 1GB of RAM, and 32GB of on-board user memory. 10.1 inch sized screen has a 1280-by-800-pixel resolution and widescreen of 16:10 aspect ratio, that makes it perfect for watching videos. It weighs 1.6 pounds and needs to be managed by both hands.
Moving on to the drawbacks, there are quite few reviews that name display issues as a top concern. Although the resolution is good, colors seem inaccurate and are not as sharp and popping, like on the iPad and Samsung Galaxy Tab. Visible grid lines and pixelation in letters throw the display off. Images are not very sharp and the Gallery app also didn’t render images properly.
The bottom is that Motorola Xoom is a solid device, but still not perfect. It may even act as a tough competition to Apple’s iPad, giving credit to Honeycomb 3.0.
Android is taking lead in the market in the smartphone market and this is evident from its ever-increasing activations. Google has reported that they are currently activating 350,000 devices every day and around 10 million Android devices every month, which is really impressive. This stunning rise in Android activations can be seen in this video. Android has been making several developments in a row including a recent app by digital comic distributor, Graphic.Ly for its digital distribution on Android.
”This milestone release marks Graphicly’s first entry to the growing and exciting Android marketplace and makes the more than 150 publishers currently available on Graphicly’s other applications available to a whole new audience.”
Having its ties with Big Data, we also heard about VMWare unveiling a mobile virtualization platform on Android that will allow the company its employees to run a personal profile as well as have a separate profile for work applications. This platform has been launched initially for Android phones, and was demonstrated on an LG Optimus Black.
