Angry Birds Flees the Coop with $42M, Looks to Scale Beyond Mobile

Angry Birds has recently passed 30 million downloads on Android, placing it among the most successful games in recent times and in mobile gaming as well. So it did not take Accel Partners and Atomico Ventures too much to decide to fund Rovio, creators of Angry Birds, with $42 million, a notable sum in the history of funding.

In addition to the figures stated above for Android devices, Angry Birds is played by 40 million monthly active users, reaching a total number of downloads around 75 million. The funding will benefit the franchise by expanding internationally, on mobile and social media markets, continuing what has started in 2010, namely opening an office in Finland. The company mentioned as well plans for launching a cartoon version broadcast on TV or online, according to Wall Street Journal.

“Angry Birds will continue to grow, and we aim to create more similar success stories. We will strengthen the position of Rovio and continue building our franchises in gaming, merchandising and broadcast media.” Mikael Hed, CEO and co-founder of Rovio.

The news regarding the launch of the Angry Birds on Facebook that was supposed to happen in March 2011, has been updated by The Next Web, which explains that the launch of the game will be delayed by two months’ time. Once the game reaches the Facebook platform, it will have to sharpen its claws. Let’s not forget that Zynga has recently reached 100 million daily unique users in its first weeks after launch and is now expanding to the Android Market as well.

Having mentioned earlier Angry Birds’ plans for expansion beyond mobile, including multiple devices and game consoles, it comes naturally for the company to look at cloud scalability on a global level. As they will need to scale up to the cloud plus back down to consumers’ devices, leveraging the cloud for game software distribution is a major part of their business strategy, especially as they grow.

WeeWorld has already found a worthy partner, namely Akamai and its super-efficient cloud tools. The lastest improvement from Akamai, the Rich Media Accelerator, proved to be a great success given the fact that it managed to improve the game experience by faster page loads with a 30% improvement rate. Thanks to could services, mobile gaming will see a notable increase in revenues by 2015 if we take into account the increasing numbers of mobile device users, possibly reaching $70.1 billion in revenues.
