Opportunities within the healthcare sector have been an excellent exploration grounds for Big Data and cloud enthusiasts. Two titans, Dell and VMware, joined forces for a heathcare initiative, and to save more lives. The partnership aims to bring in more secure and easy access to patient information, anywhere, at any time.

Dell’s Mobile Clinical Computing Platform will enable information technology to securely centralize and control of all end-user data and images with flexibility. This product will run on Meditech’s electronic health record applications and VMware’s vSphere and View virtual desktop infrastructure to allow desktop healthcare apps to be accessed in the cloud. Simply put, Dell will be providing the hardware, while virtualization, security and software will be handled by VMware.

In an interview with eWeek, Frank Nydam, VMware’s director of health care solutions, explains the ease of use and convenience that the product brings to patients. He said, “Folks don’t have to visit the hospital, which may be two floors down, two miles or two plane rides away. They simply need to fix the desktop from their one pane of glass, from their data center and redeploy the new one.” He added, “With tablets, iPad, Dell Streak, this consumerization of IT has really driven doctors to say how come I can’t have this same experience in the hospital as I can simply have at home with a consumer device.”

Both Dell and VMware have been very headline-friendly the past few weeks, with updates on every corner.  In order to keep up with the stiff competition in today’s market, VMware is looking at investing into infrastructures and tapping partnerships. The company also joins Partner Exchange 2011 in light with searching for potential tie-ups. Recently, VMware also fused with Isilon for real world cloud solutions and then pioneers Open PaaS with Cloud Foundry. Dell, on the other hand, became involved in colossal deals including a potential Compellent merger worth a whopping $1 Billion to feed its craving for storage centers.
