EMC’s Sustainability in the Cloud: On Going Green, New Data Centers and Energy Efficiency

Sustainability in the cloud has always been one of EMC’s biggest quests. The company’s relentless efforts to pioneer products and services, strategic acquisitions and big partnerships that differentiate them from the likes of IBM and HP have brought them a taste of success in this arena. In fact, the leading provider of hardware storage solutions is coming off a good year with earnings up by 28% and plans to hire more than 5,00 new talents. It was also named as top vendor by VMware and EMC Isilon bagged the 3Tier Data Management Bid. EMC also has capitalized on the strategy of remaining a formidable supplier than a direct provider—this neutrality made them earn the title: the cloud’s Switzerland.

Recent developments reveal that EMC is going green, along with other cloud companies, and there are loads of reasons why.  EMC partners with Cisco to develop cloud-based green data center. The acclaimed enterprise is also seeking to strengthen its product and services line through extending increased performance fibre channel solutions to accelerate customer’s journey to the cloud via its 16 gigabits per second (Gbps) Fibre Channel switching technology, and the release of Avamar 6.0 that will deliver immense capabilities to safeguard VMware environment. EMC also teamed up with SAS for high performance analytics, another area of extreme importance in today’s data-driven market.

In light of mergers, acquisitions and innovations, EMC has directed its focus to the booming flash drive adoption trends. It has already outlined strategies to accelerate flash adoption of high performing and energy efficient technology infrastructures in this category. Included in the cluster of stratagem are the following: the preview of EMC “Project Lightning”, launching all versions of Symmetrix VMAX and EMC VNX storage systems, selling of PCIe SSD cards to drive servers and making flash technology more affordable for users. With Wikibon’s predictions pointing towards big data flash and cloud tiering, EMC delivering the world’s most powerful, smartest and high-end storage array is expected to flaunt new encryption capabilities.

EMC’s capacity to keep diversity and productivity amidst the torturous competition is laudable. Despite meeting some adversities with VMware’s cloud foundry, the growing support on this open cloud initiative is overwhelming. Together, EMC and VMware have certainly stepped it up a notch. With growing buzz on cloud and big data around the EMC World 2011 event, kicked off yesterday, which will includes a revolutionary data scientist summit, surprising updates and ambitious products and services to be unveiled. And, SiliconANGLE will be there to cover every detail of this well-talked-about event that will be attended by over 10,000 IT professionals and media.
