Sybase Strides Forward as SAP Expands Services Strategy
SAP has promised its investors it will greatly increase its revenues in the near future, and the German software maker is working hard to accomplish that goal. For that, it needs the right people to lead this effort, and Sybase – one of the companies it has recently acquired — is the latest highlight in this category. Sybase appointed John Sims as president of its mobile services business, Sybase 365, effective as of July 1.
“We warmly welcome John to the Sybase family,” said John Chen, chairman and CEO of Sybase. “John brings a wealth of experience in the mobile market, and will focus on extending the global leadership of Sybase 365 in messaging and mobile commerce services.”
Sims brings a lot of experience in the mobile scene to Sybase – he served as CEO of a mobile development and marketing company, 724 Solution, for about nine years. He also co-founded enterprise mobile eCommerce developer TANTAU.
In other SAP news, the company released HANA into global availability only a couple days ago, and this latest announcement is proof that the company is serious about further establishing its position on software-related services. The acquisition of Sybase seems to be a very good deal based on its progress ever since the deal; a very good one, according ZDNet’s Dennis Howlett who passed by theCube to talk about this win-win move.
In addition to making a big hire, Sybase is also working on a different kind of mobile service. The company announced the general availability of SAP Transportation Management, or its SAP TM application. The software is already used by Abudawood, Artoni, Owens Corning and a couple of other companies, and is designed to improve and lower the costs of logistics. SAP TM offers automation on several logistic levels, including tendering, execution, tracking and settlement processes, as well as a way to ensure compliance for various international and hazardous materials regulations.
Another area SAP is looking into is the smart-meter market. Yesterday, the company joined Landis+Gyr AG, an alliance of companies including Logica Plc (LOG), Trilliant Inc., Itron Inc. (ITRI) and others formed to develop common standards for the U.K. smart-meter market.
