Who is the CEO Hiring? An Interview with Sugar CRM’s Larry Augustin

I was talking with Sugar CRM CEO Larry Augustin before one of the OSCON keynotes this week and he started talking about who he would like to hire.

What he said in many respects reflects the need for developers to have more experience in provisioning and deploying to the cloud.  The job postings on Indeed.com reflect this.

The 451 Group points out that the data from Indeed.com shows that the job postings for people with experience in SQL and MSQL are far greater than the job postings for people with experience in Hadoop and MongoDB.

Bu the real comparison is in terms of growth for these fast growing technologies.

Later in the day, I interviewed Augustin about who they wanted to hire. He said Sugar CRM is built on PHP and so they are looking for developers with experience in the programming language. In context, they are looking for people who know how to provision and deploy to the cloud. That means knowing Chef, Puppet, MySQL administration and the various other skill sets to do large scale deployments on any variety of cloud platforms.

Sugar CRM’s mission is to get on as many cloud platforms as possible through global deployments with the SLA the customer wants – be it AWS or IBM.

The model for services has to work around providing CRM as a service for all of its customers. Unlike traditional SaaS companies, Sugar CRM can be run on multiple types of cloud services. They have a choice, unlike a competitor like Salesforce.com which runs on its own infrastructure.
