RIM’s BlackBerry OS 7 Already Out, BBM Banned in UK

After its recent launch of the BBM 6, the revamped free messaging service exclusive for BlackBerry owners, RIM has now released three new smartphones powered by the new BlackBerry OS7.

“While not game-changing (evolutionary UI, design) and reviews expected mixed, BlackBerry 7 handsets offer competitive processors, touchscreens, some with 4G (HSPA+), and may stimulate an upgrade cycle. For example, the Bold 9900/9930 may be popular with BlackBerry fans,” said Mike Abramsky, an analyst at RBC Capital.

The three new smartphones are the Bold 9900/9930, Torch 9850/980 and Torch 9810.  What’s new about them is that their OS 7 features a 40% faster browser, the new Liquid Graphics technology will deliver high resolution displays, slicker graphics and a more responsive touchscreen.  The BlackBerry balance that separates work and personal life by creating two separate streams in one device, greater support for HTML5, and the social Feeds 2.0 for viewing all your media in one place, including Facebook 2.0 that includes the Facebook chat with BBM integration.

There’s also free work applications like Documents To Go, and backup capabilities from BlackBerry Protect, which stores all your info and data secured in the cloud.  The updated OS also includes the Universal Search Capability that lets you use your voice to start a web search.

Analyst Tero Kuittinen speculates that “RIM may have a window to make a real mark with the new Bold and Curve launches before the Android tide swamps it.  The Bold 9900 is a ‘make-or-break device’ when it comes to creating revenue growth between the August and November quarters.”

This might be the break RIM’s been waiting for.  After taking over a year to launch a new device, their latest string might just be the perfect weapon to be more competitive in the market.  But on a sad note, UK authorities are looking into banning BBM after the service was used to organize the riots in northern parts of London.
