VMware Strengthens Offerings with Growing Partner Base
VMware, EMC’s virtualization subsidiary, is taking several approaches to becoming even more established, as well as providing newer offerings that are more attractive to customers, one of them being the expansion of its partner base and 3rd party support for its products.
Today data security firm IdentityLogix announced the SpyLogix for VMware module for its security intelligence software. SpyLogix aims to streamline vCenter’s overly intricate administrative role based access control (RBAC).
“RBAC is configured and stored within multiple resources used by VMware, with each resource having an assigned order of precedence within VMware’s security hierarchy. And with the granularity of RBAC permissions offered by VMware, complexity in management and control over administrative permissions increases exponentially.”
Another company that had a similar announcement this week is Nutanix. The startup debuted Complete Cluster, a vCenter-powered all-in-one storage server that is designed to cut IT overheads by avoiding the costs of integrating components from multiple vendors. The price tag is set at $115,000 per unit.
Cloud Foundry is also gaining momentum. VMware plans on monetizing the open-source PaaS currently in beta by cashing in on paid sister services, which is why distribution and integration are two of its key focuses. Yesterday the company said in a joint announcement with Canonical, the maker of the Ubuntu Linux distro, that the next version dubbed Oneiric Ocelot will arrive with built-in Cloud Foundry tools. Canonical claims it has 12 million users worldwide, and version 11.10 will start shipping in October.
The VMware ecosystem is expanding in other directions as well. In addition to its partnership with Canonical, the company also announced team-ups with Dell, enStratus and Opscode. Dell will release its open Crowbar installer, enStratus is deploying Cloud Foundry in its datacenter and OpsCode will publish automated scripts for the platform.
