Big Data Gleans Funding, Partnerships and New Products

It has been another busy week for big data providers. We have seen few interesting developments this week focused mainly on funding, acquisitions and new products launches, indicating a growing business inclination around big data services.

Acquisitions, Partnerships and Funding

This week started with the social analytics firm Apsalar’s $5 million round of funding from various investors to expand its product portfolio.  They’re targeting cloud-based mobile analytics and behavioral targeting platform solutions for iOS and Android app developers.

Another big data provider, 10gen, raised $20 million in a funding round led by Sequoia Capital to meet growing global demand for MongoDB across enterprises, media, gaming and government organizations.  The company that creates products on the document-oriented NoSQL MongoDB open source platform also announced the launch of the second version of MongoDB (Version 2.0).  The new edition offers 25 percent faster index calculations, shared cluster authentication and more.

Opera Solutions also announced one of the biggest funding rounds last week.  The big data software provider safeguarded $84 million in a first round of funding led by Silver Lake Sumeru, Accel-KKR, Invus Financial Advisors, JGE Capital Management, and Tola Capital. The new funding will help the company expand its Vektor analytics and signals processing platform products.

There was also news on Hadoop support provider, Gluster, on partnership front. The Open-source storage software developer Gluster, teamed up with Savage IO, a NAS network storage servers provider, to integrate Gluster’s GlusterFS platform to Savage IO’s data storage systems. The new offering will be used cloud deployments and on-premise and provide a cost effective solution to IT infrastructure.  Gluster is investing a lot on partnerships to expand its Hadoop-driven ecosystem via integration with other open-source cloud and data offerings.

Lastly, SAP acquired Right Hemisphere, the company that develops 3D visualization tools for enterprise users. SAP also teamed up with Linux to support Linux 6 to run SAP business applications. The new acquisition will help SAP to enter its business to open source, mobile and big data areas.

New Product Launches

The startup gamification provider to e-commerce and web publishing websites, Badgeville, last week announced a new product called Social Fabric that allows users to see activity and interaction with friends and other people within circles of interest in real time. The new product launch is aimed to add social networking features on websites and provide a competitive environment similar to developments we’re seeing from Google and Facebook.

Fusion-io also had some news.  The Flash-based storage provider partnered with Kaminario to develop the Kaminario K2 storage.  Kaminario provides Solid-state SAN storage to enterprises.  The new service would be one of the first all solid-state SAN products in the market.  The partnership is an important strategy for Fusion-io as the new product will optimize the performance of heavy business applications and help the company to attract newer customer base.

OpenStack also found a new provider last week.  ServiceMesh, the enterprise cloud solutions provider, declared support for OpenStack, enhancing its Agility platform.  The company’s Agility platform provides users to setup OpenStack cloud and deployments through VMware and Amazon Web Services.  The OpenStack community is just a year old but we’ve already seen a number of high profile partnerships emerge from RackSpace’s open source initiative.
