SugarSync Update Brings Android App up to Par

SugarSync made some significant updates to their Android and iOS personal cloud offerings this week. For Android, SugarSync extended the Mobile Device Management, which used to be available for iOS only.  It streamlines the transport of files from computer to mobile devices.  For iOs, Sugarsync adds a text editor and new functionality for increased productivity to put more power into users’ hands through mobile devices.

“SugarSync has always supported the most mobile devices in the industry, but we’re constantly striving to enhance the mobile Cloud experience,” said Laura Yecies, CEO of SugarSync.

“With our updated SugarSync for iOS app, you can now create and edit plain text files directly from the app, as well as take advantage of several new productivity improvements we’ve added. With the update to our Android app, we have added Mobile Device Management for Android devices. With SugarSync, you can now be as productive from your mobile device as you are from your laptop.”

The built-in text editor for iOS is available for iPhones and iPads.  It allows users to create and edit plain text files without leaving the app, or purchasing an editor from a third-party.  The revisions automatically sync to your personal cloud and will be accessible across all of your devices. This doesn’t mean they are going to drop support for their document-editing apps though. SugarSync will continue to offer Quickoffice, Documents To Go, ReaddleDocs and other apps users can freely enjoy by using the service using an iOS device.

SugarSync streamlines the process of uploading photos and videos, creating new folder or any text files on any computer or folder, and sorting them.  If you’ve got way too many pictures taken from your mobile devices, then you don’t need those cables to transfer them to your PC.  You can just automatically sync them to the cloud and access them from your computer.  You can also create new folders on your smartphone and have them accessible across all your devices.  If you’ve got files you need for offline use, you can also sync them to your device.  This is especially handy for working on the go, during a trip.

SugarSync’s Mobile Device Management now available for Android also streamlines the import and export of data from your device.  Mobile Device Management was first introduced to iOS in June. SugarSync caters 95 percent of all devices available today.

In a Forrester research last month, SugarSync was among the top 13 companies in mobile collaboration, along with Box, Adobe, Cisco, IBM, salesforce.com, Skype and Yammer. It’s also gaining traction and is becoming more and more of a serious threat to storage companies like Box.

The personal cloud space is a booming one, reiterating the effect of consumerization on IT.  But as we’ve seen from some of the updates in this latest SugarSync push, as well as other personal cloud services, the line between consumer and mobile worker is blurring.  Features designed for work and play are being incorporated into SugarSync, giving the company the flexibility to grow its enterprise offerings, as well as its consumer-facing product moving forward.  As many mobile users are both consumers and employees, there will be a growing demand for apps that can provide services on both sides of the fence.
