Skype Infographic – No Silverlight Required [w00t]
The one nice thing about a Microsoft infographic about Skype? No Silverlight required! If you want to see the video of Microsoft Skype President Tony Bates, that’s a different story. You’ll need Silverlight to see the interview with the new chief. Remember, this is Microsoft after all.
Lync is the corporate cousin of Skype. I make a bit of a joke about Silverlight but it fits with what I heard today. A Microsoft rep at Dell World told me video does not work on iPads for people connecting into a video conference using Lync. He said executives can use their laptops.
On stage Ballmer talked about the ways Skype will work with Lync. He made a big deal to talk about the enterprise video integration. But if it does not work on an iPad, doesn’t that make for a bit of an issue?
The rep pointed out that the Lync client will be available on iOS and Android. We’ve seen these reports before but we wonder how the conferencing issue will play out.
A few facts to share from the infographic:
- 300 million minutes per day are logged on Skype.
- Video calls account for 42% of all Skype minutes.
- 1.8 billion hours of video calls are made per year.
- Most video calls are made on Sundays.
Services Angle
The infographic is certainly nifty but the services play will be a big question for us as Skype integrates with Lync. Steve Ballmer said on stage at Dell World today that Skype would be available with Lync for corporate instant messaging. But what about using it as an online service for corporate use? When will it integrate with Office 365? Company executives said this summer Skype and Lync will remain separate but bundled with Office 365. No word yet on when that integration may occur.
