Chime.in: Gross’ Take On Social Network

Facebook, Google+, Twitter, Tumblr, Flickr… these are just some of the top social networking, blogging and microblogging sites in the web and there are lots more.  You’d think that we don’t need another social networking site.  But one tech veteran thinks otherwise.

Bill Gross, Founder of Technology Incubator Idealab and 100 other companies in last 30 years, thinks that the social scene needs a little “umpf.”  So UberMedia, the world’s leading independent developer of feature-rich social media products founded in early 2010 as TweetUp which was later changed to PostUp by Gross brings us, Chime.in, a social media platform that focuses on specific interests instead of being generic like Facebook and Twitter.

“I’ve been completely smitten with social media over the last few years,” Gross said in an interview last week. “I think it’s a global phenomenon that is world changing.”

Chime.in users can share their chimes on Facebook, Twitter and Google+ so your social networks are kind of intertwined with each other.  Also, chimes are easily sortable and searchable by interests, people sharing them, popularity, and timeline so you don’t have to pull your hair out trying to find the topic you’d like to follow.

“We’re definitely borrowing those good ideas. But this is a deeper dive into their interests and intelligent conversations around [users’] passions,” Gross said in an interview with VentureBeat.

Like any other social networks, users can upload photos, videos, post links, start polls, etc. and the interface looks like Facebook’s Timeline, and there are also comment boxes called ‘chimes’ that acts like tweets.  So simply put, Chime.in is a fusion of Facebook and Twitter.  So what could Chime.in offer that others don’t?  UberMedia promises that content creators would get 100% of advertising revenues for their Chime.in pages if they sell the ads themselves and a 50% cut if UberMedia handles ad sales.

“The whole world is shifting to social,” Gross said. “Every transaction online is going to have social embedded in it. The monetization of social media is going to be a huge opportunity in the future.”

Chime.in will officially launch tomorrow though the mobile app is already available today at Apple’s iTunes App Store.

UberMedia is popular for their Twitter apps such as Echofon, UberSocial for Android, UberTwitter, and A.plus, a branded Twitter app for actor and tech entrepreneur Ashton Kutcher.
