Data Recovery and Backup Industry Sees Growing Adoption, New Products

The big data explosion many companies are experiencing today is leading to a number of changes in the traditional datacenter, and data recovery and backup is an area that is no exception.  Bigger datasets mean more bandwidth, and the UK-based Bridgeworks has been capitalizing this space.

The data storage connectivity firm released a case study that covers CVS Caremark’s use of its SANSlide appliance. The pharmacy chain leverages the solution to port about 430GB of data from its Scottsdale to its Woonsocket facility a day. According to Bridgeworks, the latency on the company’s network resulted in average transfer times of about 15 hours per 50GB, a timeframe it claims SANSlide has shrunk by about 50 times.

“To achieve this, Bridgeworks’ SANSlide constantly monitors the performance of the link between SANSlide nodes and responds to changes in the network conditions such as packet loss, latency and QOS pushback by changing a range of network and paralleled pipeline parameters to ensure optimum performance at all times.”

There are a lot of offerings on the market that patch a variety of issues, which tend to be promptly addressed by vendors that are expanding or upgrading their portfolios. Quantum, for one, recently refreshed its existing line-up with the launch of new DXi 2.1 software for its DXi8500 disk system, along with the  Scalar i6000 tape library and the  Quantum Vision storage analytics tool.

The launch was announced less than a week after data protection solutions vendor FalconStor had a serious executive shuffle alongside its earnings call.  Four new members entered the company’s management team, including freshly-appointed CFO Bryan Urquhart, EMEA marketing head Philippe Bernard and Suresh Nair, who will serve in the same role Urquhart assumed expect in Asia Pacific. Lastly, Jim Weber is now FalconStor’s VP of operations.
