A Voice Test: Microsoft TellMe v. Apple Siri
A Microsoft executive said this week that its TellMe service on Windows Phone 7 is similar to Apple Siri.
Jason Carwright, a videoblogger from Australia, decided to put the two to a side-by-side test: TellMe on Windows Phone 7 v. Siri on the Apple 4S.
He asked: “Create a meeting at 10 a.m.”
Siri: Noted that the tester already had a meeting at that time.
TellMe: Responded with the text: “Create a meeting tomorrow at teen anal.”
Second question: “Send a text to Simone.”
Siri: “Okay…what would you like it to say?”
TellMe: “Stain detector sino”
TellMe makes the embarrassing mistakes we have seen many times before with voice recognition software. You can’t depend on it.
Siri, though, is an intelligent agent. It means all kinds of steps may potentially be eliminated. Forms, search boxes and other tasks that require a keyboard may only need your voice instead to retrieve the information you ar seeking. Siri gets us within grasp of a new reality for application development. TellMe only reminds us that most voice recognition software is an experiment that has little or no value in helping us in our busy lives.
