YouTube Announces 1 Trillion Playbacks: Reveals 2011 Biggest Video Hits
Earlier last week we looked at some of the most common search engine queries that Google published through Google Zeitgeist. Now, the Google-owned video-streaming platform YouTube has announced the world’s biggest hits over the past 12 months. Some of these may surprise you … some maybe not.
You can see the full figures and stats for yourself here at YouTube official blog post. This is the complete list of the 10 most watched videos on YouTube in 2011:
1) Rebecca Black – Friday (Official Music Video)
3) Jack Sparrow (feat. Michael Bolton)
4) Talking Twin Babies (Part 2) (Official Video)
6) Look At Me Now – Chris Brown feat. Lil Wayne, Busta Rhymes (Cover by @ KarminMusic)
7) The Creep (feat. Nicki Minaj & John Waters)
8) Maria Aragon – Born This Way (Cover) by Lady Gaga

The speech of a young college student from Iowa, Zach Wahlsvi, who appeals so her two mothers can marry, is the most clicked video on YouTube politics of 2011, beating out President Barack Obama. “Ultimate Dog Teaser,” which features a dog for his master laments ate all the bacon. Since its publication, the “Ultimate Dog Teaser” had all kinds of parodies, but the original is still the most watched, received some 74,301,792 views on YouTube.
“Today, we rewind through the videos and channels that absorbed our collective global attention this year”, says Kevin Allocca, YouTube Trends Manager in a blog post today. He continued:
“To compile these lists, we looked at global view counts of popular videos uploaded throughout this year, and, in some instances, we aggregated views across multiple versions of the same video. 2011 was a year of amazing new channels and new stars being discovered, awesome creativity, and of course, Rebecca Black. It was also a year of powerful news stories playing out on YouTube, as people witnessed and documented uprisings and natural disasters, touching personal moments and moments of protest.”
It was also a year that saw YouTube grow in strength and services, and has been in the news for good reason. It recently offered an online interactive program for schools, students and teachers called “YouTube for Schools.” Through this new initiative, users will receive all the training videos, documentaries, and theoretical explanations, complete courses from universities around the world.
In a recently concluded study by comScore for the month of October, YouTube topped the list as the most preferred online video viewing with 160,959 unique viewers, followed by Facebook with 59,815 unique viewers, and third on the list is Vevo with 56,998 unique viewers. Online video ads reached at 7.5 million with Hulu were the leader of largest share of online video ads.
