DataDirect Reveals Two New Data Crunching Appliances

DataDirect Networks unveiled its two latest offerings today for general availability – the DDN SFA10K-M and SFA10K-ME appliances, designed to handle large data-driven workloads.

“One of the key attributes of today’s Big Data is the lack of predictability of data growth across customer environments,” said Alex Bouzari, CEO of DDN.

“Today’s announcement of our SFA10K-M and SFA10K-ME platforms is an important step in furthering the democratization of Big Data and enabling our customers to resolve Big Data unpredictability by starting small and growing incrementally into massively scalable Big Data technology.”

The ME features homegrown in-memory processing technology, a method to get the data closer to the app that’s also leveraged in SAP’s HANA platform and other offerings.  It can be configured to support either InfiniBand or Ethernet connectivity, and can integrate with DDN’s GridScaler and ExaScaler solutions for particularly large deployments: upwards of 10 petabytes and 1TB/s performance, according to the company.

The other new product is the SFA10K-M block storage appliance, which can come with either InfiniBand or Fibre Channel and delivers up to 10GB/s and 720TB of capacity in a 20U rack. DataDirect is offering the 10K-M for a discount in the first three months.

Big data is changing entire ecosystems: from BI software to the backend storage and networking environments, needing to handle ever-increasing workloads to keep up with the frontend requirements. DDN has recognized the opportunity to sell scalable storage to companies facing this issue, and has been going at it for a long time – now with these two new solutions.

The company’s previous expansion was not in its product portfolio, but rather a new addition to its board of directors, Joseph Cowan.  He’s the chief executive officer of Online Resources Corporation, and has a lot of experience serving on different IT boards.
