NAB Final Recap: New Value, New Ways of Making Big Data Work
TheCube has been streaming content throughout the entirety of this week’s NAB conference. John Furrier and Dave Vellante reflected on their observations at the end of each day, and summarized some of the key highlights.
Day 2 focused on the technology that’s helping to transform traditional media. Vellante looked at the different role of storage in this industry, and Furrier expanded on software’s key role in the overall innovation process.
One example of such a solution is Thunderbolt, a connectivity interface developed by Intel that adds support to PCI Express and DisplayPort. Apple has dominated the professional design space with its Macs for quite some time now, and its close relationship with the chipmaker, including Thunderbolt integration, is one of the key reasons behind that.
Furrier dug deeper, noting that it’s a big mistake on behalf of Hewlett-Packard (which offers its workstations to the same demographic as Apple) to not offer the industry a similar level of support.
The second part of the Day 2 recap transitioned to a broader look at this week’s updates, including Zynga’s decision to start another shopping spree.
Day 3 was an entirely different matter.
Furrier and Vellante examined the way traditional media is getting itself involved with the analytics trend – studios are not used to working with their data. The industry’s datasets are not necessarily getting bigger but they are forced to find new ways of exploiting it to keep up with competition. And the emphasis here is different as well: not bottom line business edge, but rather the creation of more user-centric experiences.
Alongside this shift there’s also the changing economics of the technology behind it. Production equipment and software are getting cheaper and more accessible to the massive, which Furrier expects to result in a big talent boom further down the road.
