Angry Birds, Instagram Reach 50 Million Downloads
Rovio is certainly making the most out of the now out of proportions Angry Bird franchise, from the introduction of micro-transactions to the game’s reincarnation just over a month ago. The top ranking mobile app debuted in its new wrapping as Angry Birds Space late March, and this week the Finnish developer is celebrating a first milestone.
Since its March 22 launch Angry Birds Space has been downloaded over 50 million times, according to Rovio’s official blog post. That’s a pretty big accomplishment, made even more notable thanks to the short amount of time it took the re-branded title to reach it.
Not that surprisingly, 50 million downloads in35 days got the app a fancy new title.

Rovio’s freshest title managed to maintain this status for two weeks in a row after launch, until it was claimed by Draw Something with its 50 million downloads in under 50 days. The free app, developed by OMGPOP, can be described as a social word-guessing game tossed into a box of crayons. And apparently this milestone was worth $230 million for Zynga, which ended up acquiring the newly surfaced developer for about that much.
Free mobile applications seem to be worth quite a bit these days, if only based on their future monetization potential or the sheer amount of current users. Facebook’s $1 billion acquisition of Instagram is an even better example of this, and SiliconANGLE Editor-in-Chief Mark Hopkins raised all the right questions in a follow-up post for the buy. But it seems Zuckerberg made the right call on this one, as Instagram, too, has just reached the 50 million mark.
