Wikibon Survey Shows 2012 Really is the Year of Cloud
We’re liv
e at EMC World with #theCube and I’ve been squinting through the recent Wikibon IT Transformation Survey results. Data is still trickling in but we had over 200 Wikibon members take the survey which was designed to get a read on the maturity of customers’ IT transformation initiatives.
We’ll be reporting full results but wanted to quickly share some interesting cloud adoption data.
Last June we conducted a survey and asked: “Which of the following best describes your cloud computing strategy?” Comparing data from a year ago with the current (May 2012) survey, the data shows the following:
- A meaningful portion of the practitioner audience last year felt that cloud computing was a buzzword of unclear meaning (15%) while only 5% this year feel cloud has no meaning;
- A rather small portion (9%) of last year’s audience indicated that hybrid cloud was their primary cloud strategy– a rather tepid proof point of vendor marketing at the time. However in less than 12 months, that figure has shot up to 37% of our respondent base. Clearly a mix of public and private cloud is becoming the dominant strategy;
- We’re moving beyond early adoption into the mainstream with cloud as our survey shows that those customer with no cloud plans and those just getting started are groups that are shrinking.
The following table compares this year’s survey results on cloud with those of June 2011:
