Monday Mobile Roundup: Games on TV, More NFC and an Acquisition for MoMo
Today’s mobile news roundup features Draw Something’s future in TV, HTC’s mobile banking phone, Motorola Solutions’ acquisition of Psion, and more.
Draw Something to become a TV show
The popular guessing game Draw Something by OMGPOP, previously acquired by Zynga, will soon become a television show.
CBS Broadcasting Inc. purchased the pilot of the show which will feature celebrities and players competing at home for prizes. The Draw Something TV show is a joint project of Sony Pictures Television, Ryan Seacrest Productions and Embassy Row.
“Television has to compete with other screens now; people are sitting at home with laptops, tablets and phones,” Dr Helen Wheatley, a television historian at Warwick University, said.
‘This is a further example of the convergence of media cultures. Shows in the UK like Rude Tube have simply brought the YouTube comic clip on to television in a way that’s trying to be like an internet sensation.’
HTC to push mobile banking efforts in Taiwan
HTC, the fifth largest phone vendor in the world, is partnering with Cathay United Bank, EasyCard Corp., and MasterCard International to deliver a mobile banking phone in Taiwan. HTC will offer the HTC Incredible E, a line of NFC enabled phones equipped with a microsized memory card containing credit card and EasyCard to facilitate contactless payment.
Motorola Solutions acquires Psion for $200M
Motorola Solutions acquired electronics company Psion Plc. for $200 million. Psion is best known for their ruggedized mobile computing products and their application in industrial segments around the world.
“Psion is a compelling opportunity to strengthen our industry-leading, mobile-computing portfolio with ruggedized handheld products and vehicle-mount terminals that will deepen our presence in the global markets in which we compete,” Greg Brown, chairman and CEO of Motorola Solutions, said.
When the deal is complete, Motorola Solutions will combine Psion within Motorola Solutions’ Enterprise Mobile Computing (EMC) business, reporting to Girish Rishi, corporate vice president, EMC.
Nokia teases consumers with Facebook post
Before the week ended, Microsoft invited the media for a press event on Monday. So when Nokia posted 6.18.12 on their Facebook account, people assumed that they would be a part of Microsoft’s event.
Speculations involved an 808 PureView Windows Phone version or that Nokia could be announcing a Nokia Windows 8 tablet at the Microsoft event. But before you get your hopes up for a Nokia tablet, I’ll burst your bubble. Nokia will not be a part of the Microsoft event and Nokia’s announcement is regarding the availability of the Nokia 808 PureView in the US.
Sharp’s new Android UI
Japanese electronics company, Sharp, will be releasing a new user interface that will set them apart from the hoards of Android devices available in the market.
The new UI, “Feel UX”, features a simplistic design with large icons, and allows many phone functions, such as camera, photo gallery, and music player applications, to be accessed directly from the lock screen. The lock screen can also automatically alter its background photo to match the weather, and displays updates on stocks and other real-time info as well as messages and missed calls. Unlike most UIs wherein the photo featured on the lock screen is obscured by time or message information, Sharp’s new UI is never blocked as time or message info appear across a section in the bottom third of the screen.
