Nirvanix Hires New C-Level to Boost Media Strategy

Storage startup Nirvanix hired Dru Borden as its new chief strategic officer, with the goal of bolstering its clientele in the media business.

Borden brings the best of both worlds to the company: executive experience coupled with the industry-specific IT expertise that Nirvanix needs to be able to market its hardware in this market.  He was in charge of engineering for CBS as vice presid3ent of application architecture and served a similar role as NBCUniversal’s chief software architect. The job descriptions at both companies were fairly similar, covering not only R&D but also implementation and deployment. He has about 15 years of experience in this field.

Borden shared some of his unique insight about what Nirvanix’ prospective clients are dealing with in a statement:

“As the media and entertainment sector transitions to an all-digital workflow, its challenges are further amplified due to the sheer size of HD content files and the need for large-scale content collaboration across multiple geo locations,” said Borden. “Cloud storage is rapidly gaining traction as a cost-effective component and business enabler in modern post-production workflows and its adoption is spreading to all industries dealing with the rise of unstructured data.”

Nirvanix is gunning for cable companies and broadcasters. A few months ago it landed a big contract with Nat Geo, which at the time described a very similar scenario to what Borden outlined in his note: a need to manage growing amounts of unstructured data without spending too much on storage.  The National Geographic  Society decided that Nirvanix’s CloudNAS was best suited to accommodate this increase, and provided a few extra details about its use of the technology as well.
