Pure Storage Announces Massive Changes to FlashArray Software

All-flash storage vendor Pure Storage updated the software powering its flagship storage system, FlashArray.

As far as new features go, FlashArray will ship with ZeroSnap Snapshots, a new component that has been optimized to run on HDDs.  The company touts a capacity of up to 1,000 snapshots and a lot of automation – snapshots are taken instantly without the need to pre-allocate space, and are then automatically deduped and compressed to save as much space as possible. The snapshots have full read/write capabilities and can be used to recover volume in the array.

The other new additions all expand the number of environments FlashArray can actually run in. The solution now supports iSCSI connectivity, and the high-availability configuration has achieved VMware Ready status. It’s also VAAI-enabled, and Pure Storage developed a brand new web plugin for vSphere, which offers admins the management functionality and visibility they need to manage a VMware-virtualized FlashArray deployment.

“Pure Storage has succeeded in delivering the performance, usability, and cost benefits that Yodle needed from flash,” said John Merryman, CTO at Yodle. “The FlashArray product has provided us with considerable improvement on the performance limits that you typically get with a mechanical disk.”

These features will be available as a part of Pure Storage Purity Operating Environment 2.5, which is currently undergoing beta testing and will be available for free to customers with an existing maintenance agreement with the firm.

This latest update underscores the vendor’s goal of addressing a broader spectrum of enterprise requirements, and as a result increase its client based. Last month Pure Storage launched a partner program  that opened up its product line-up to the channel, and is offering prospective partners a number of incentives to sweeten the deal.
