Cloudant to Provide Cloud Database Service to GAIN Fitness
NoSQL data layer as a service provider, Cloudant, has announced that personal training mobile app, GAIN Fitness has selected it to replace PostgreSQL, in order to provide more scalable application performance to their rapidly growing user base. GAIN Fitness will leverage Cloudant’s Data Layer managed cloud database service to enrich the user experience with real time workout analytics and mobile data sync for off-line app usage.
GAIN Fitness’s app has over100, 000 users, and helps them create customized workouts based on their physical characteristics, primary fitness goals, and available workout time and equipment, by using algorithms designed to apply the expertise of pro trainers. Why GAIN Fitness has chosen Cloudant is because it provides greater database scalability to handle its expanding user base, and can leverage Cloudant’s capabilities to monitor, manage and scale the app for them, so that their developers can stay focused on new development and not on database administration.
“The user experience is paramount to our success, and the mobile data replication and sync, and real time analytics enabled by Cloudant are a big part of that,” said David Hoffman, CTO, GAIN Fitness. “And using cloud platforms like Heroku for our app layer and Cloudant for our data layer, keeps our development team squarely focused on new features that improve the user experience, not back-end IT operations.”
Some other reasons that helped GAIN Fitness take this decision include several features offered by Cloudant, such as JSON data storage and API, real-time analytics, and Cloudant’s built-in data replication and sync enables users to record workout data and view reports.
Cloudant provides developers of large-scale and fast-growing web and mobile applications with the world’s first globally distributed “data layer as a service” for loading, storing, analyzing, and distributing application data. Being chosen by GAIN Fitness is particularly interesting as this highlights the benefits of a fully managed data layer, the benefits of NoSQL over databases such as PostgreSQL, and even the data management requirements for mobile and Web based applications.
Cloudant has been doing well in different spheres, and is growing nicely. Just last month, it announced that the independent developer Hothead Games has expanded its use of the Cloudant Data Layer managed cloud database service to support the growth of its hugely popular series of Big Win Sports mobile games. Hothead Games is an independent games development studio, focused on developing and publishing high quality games for mobile gamers.
