This Week in the Cloud: Mobile Development, OpenStack and Integration
A couple of updates from the mobile dev cloud stood out in this week’s top stories: both Microsoft and appMobi have made a move to increase their appeal to app developers with new hosted platforms.
Microsoft has stepped it up with this week’s launch of Azure Mobile Services, infrastructure customized to make it as straight-forward as possible for mobile developers to manage their apps, the data that those apps use and a number of other things. The only catch is that Mobile Services only works with Windows 8 apps for now, but support for Android, iOS and Windows Phone is due to be released soon.
As for appMobi , it debuted privateStack – an enterprise-ready platform for HTML5 applications. The PaaS runs on Amazon Web Services and provides clients with the ability to not only develop cross-platform apps, but also control deployment, security and other critical processes.
In the consumer space, Box is touting new software that will make file sync considerably faster for users of the cloud locker. The company is opening up new regional centers all around the globe, and is rolling out new CDN software that analyzes user data to find the optimal route for their files.
This week was a big one for a couple other companies as well. The OpenStack Foundation officially launched with a full management team and $10 million in corporate backing.
In turn, SnapLogic announced that it has received $20 million in Series C funding from a number of big name Silicon Valley VCs including Andreseen Horowitz and Ignition. The firm offers a cloud integration platform that enables users to manage their APIs via a drag-and-drop interface that offers unparalleled simplicity.
