Quest Launches New Analytics Software for Hadoop

Quest, the data management firm that Dell acquired this year for $2.4 billion, unveiled three new products that extend the capabilities of the open-source big data platform.

Dell already has a couple of Hadoop products out on the market: its homegrown configuration tool, Crowbar, and an appliance that runs Cloudera’s distribution on the analytics engine. The new solutions from Quest make for a huge extension of this line-up.

One of the new offerings is Kitenga Analytics, a platform that offers structured, semi-structured and unstructured data analytics capabilities in addition to a broad spectrum of other features. Among these are search, machine-learning and data visualization.

Quest also unveiled details for Toad for Hadoop, the upcoming release of its popular database development and testing tool. The new release features query and data management functionality for Hadoop, as well as an interface for the Quest Hadoop Connector.

“Toad for Hadoop opens up the world of Hadoop to developers, DBA’s, and Analysts.  It allows for provides great visibility into jobs and overall performance, simplifies the ability to query using standard SQL into Hadoop using either command line or drag-and-drop interface,” said John Whittaker, Director of Marketing at Dell.” Users can also perform cross-platform queries, views, and snaphots.  Toad continues to lead the market in productivity enhancing tools for data professionals.”

In addition to these two updates, Quest also added Hadoop functionality to the next version of SharePlex, replication solution for Oracle environments.  The enhanced edition will copy data from Oracle databases and transfer it to Hadoop or other DBs without any downtime.

Dell is serious about big data, but that doesn’t mean the vendor has allowed itself to slack off its in core markets. Earlier this month it unveiled the PowerVault MD3260 storage array series, which consists of three different, flash-enabled configurations.
