Boeing Tests CHAMP Missile with High-powered Microwave Pulse

As the era of cyberwarfare picks momentum, here we have some new development in the related domain. Boeing has successfully tested the CHAMP missile, Counter-electronics High-powered Advanced Missile Project, an air-launched device that uses a high-powered microwave pulse to disable electrical systems. So, it actually revolves around cyber security as well. The company tested the project Utah Test and Training Range and successfully toasted electrical systems in a two storey building.

“We hit every target we wanted to, we prosecuted every one. Today we made science fiction science fact,” said Keith Coleman, CHAMP program manager for Boeing Phantom Works. “When that computer went out, when we fired, it actually took out the cameras as well. We took out everything on that, it was fantastic.”

Besides, Boeing said that multiple targets can be hit on a single run but didn’t specifying just how many. Though this is a big achievement by the company, it didn’t share much details about the project. For instance, it said last week’s hour-long test hit seven targets, but didn’t specify how many missiles were used. Also, it is not known whether this is a reusable weapon, or how it destroys itself once exhausted. Further, Boeing has given no word on the effect on human beings, as it uses high powered microwave pulse.

“Something that us in the cybersecurity industry often set aside is that ‘cyberwarfare’ is much more than just software vs. software,” says Kyt Dotson, editor of HackANGLE. “Electronic warfare is also a component and the ability to knock out the electronic eyes, ears, heartbeat–communication, so forth–is an important part of using technology in the theater of war. Of course, most installations that have mission critical equipment will also have hardening against EMP, but that’s the nature of the Red Queen race.”
