This past week features three noteworthy updates in the Big Data realm: two product launches and one multi-dollar settlement.

A UK-based firm called SDL introduced a machine translation tool that can process multilingual content, such as social media interactions, in real-time. Dubbed BeGlobal, the modular solution can plug into third party text analytics solutions and feed the translated information into the system.
BeGlobal’s open API is what allows the integration, and support for encrypted internet protocols makes it viable for global firms that target diverse audiences with their products. The deal-breaking factor, however, is the effectiveness of the translation engine, which SDL did not disclose: flexibility and security are not worth anything if a solution can’t deliver the goods.
In the enterprise space, Egnyte announced its own update. The company added support for several popular cloud services to EgnytePlus, its flagship enterprise data management product.
EgnytePlus handles data based on how the user labels it – Replication, Archive or Sharing. The newest version of the framework facilitates the migration of sharable information to and from Amazon S3, Google Cloud Storage, Azure and NetApp GRID.
Last but not least in this roundup is the news from Google: after a lengthy legal battle, the company finally settled a high profile privacy violation lawsuit filed by a coalition of 38 states. The search giant was accused of scooping sensitive data from millions of unprotected WiFi networks as a part of its Street View mapping project.
Google agreed to pay $7 million in damages, a nominal fine for a company of its size, and take measures to ensure history won’t repeat itself. The latter list includes internal privacy education initiatives, and the publication of tutorials that will raise awareness of the need for encryption.
