Could a Microsoft SmartWatch Boost Win8 Sales?

Wearable devices.  They’re all the rage, and even as the FitBand continues to grow in popularity, the next gadget craze is expected to be a smart watch: always-there, accessible and conceptually impregnated in our minds through decades of Sci-Fi flicks.

So now that smartphones and tablets have completely saturated the market, the world awaits the next “big thing.”  While Apple and Google are both expected to launch their respective smart watches soon, and Samsung prepares a smart watch launch of its own this year, Microsoft could be rejoining the fray with a smart watch device all its own.

This wouldn’t be Microsoft’s first attempt at a smart watch, though the software maker is relatively new to the hardware space.  Microsoft can no longer rely solely on partners to market and distribute its software — Google made sure of that.  Perhaps Microsoft’s only hope is to manufactuer and promote its own complete package, pushing products for its software directly to consumers.

When it comes to Windows 8 in particular, Microsoft’s released the Surface tablet line-up and could be coming out with a 7-inch smartphone soon.  But these late-to-market devices have yet to reclaim the prominence Microsoft hoped for, and a smart watch could be another attempt to woo the consumer back to the Redmond company’s OS camp.
