Nokia Lumia 928 “Hero Phone” Debuts on Vanity Fair
Back in March, rumors began spreading that Verizon would be releasing its own version of the Nokia Lumia 920 (so far exclusive to AT&T), which was dubbed the Lumia 928.
Well, we can now confirm that the Lumia 928 page is up and running, though there’s nothing much described on it that you haven’t already seen in Vanity Fair or on a billboard. Yes, Verizon has decided to use print ads to let people know that the Lumia 928 will be arriving in their stores soon. Why print? I guess Verizon and Nokia want to maintain a thin shroud of mystery over the device, since all that we can gather from the ad is that it’s a Windows Phone, it takes great photos even when the lighting sucks, it features Optical Image Stabilization or OIS, and a Carl Zeiss lens. Or it could be that Nokia and Verizon planned on unveiling the device earlier, booked ad spots, encountered some hiccups in the production line, so they just settled with giving people a glimpse of what the Lumia 928 is all about, rather than throwing all of that advertising money down the drain.
Aside from the features mentioned on the ad, the Lumia 928 is said to sport a 4.5-inch OLED display and support for simultaneous voice and LTE (SVLTE) on Verizon.
One thing that does seem apparent, though the ads are vague, is that it looks as if the Lumia 928 is coming very soon and could be launched as soon as Nokia’s London event on May 14. This launch will be in line with Nokia CEO Stephen Elop’s remarks during the company’s first quarter earnings call in mid-April regarding a “hero device” to be launched in the second quarter.
“Later this quarter, a new Lumia device is anticipated to have hero status with a leading US operator,” said Elop.
Nokia launched the Lumia 920 under AT&T last year, and despite all the doom and gloom around Microsoft lately, it has been fairly well received. Lumia shipments were up by 20 percent in the last quarter and the Lumia 928 may just have the same effect for Nokia’s second quarter.
