ServiceNow VP Discusses App Creation for Newbies
ServiceNow has positioned itself at the forefront of the abstraction tidal wave that’s sweeping through IT with the recent launch of App Creator, a new system that makes it much easier for users to extend their platform with custom functionality. Matt Schvimmer, the company’s vice president of product management, talked about the news and discussed the value of simplicity with theCube hosts Dave Vellante and Jeff Frick.
Schvimmer boasts that App Creator offers a great deal of depth for developers, and yet doesn’t require users to possess any programming skills to get started. The only prerequisite, he says, is an understanding of the “language of business.” App Creator enables users to put together form-based apps and other simple features as easily as Excel spreadsheets. At the same time, developers are provided with all the tools they require to write powerful apps using JavaScript.
According to Schvimmer, the differentiator that gives ServiceNow an edge over competing change management platforms is its ease of use. His company’s solution lets developers build an app, set access controls and roll it out to production from within a single environment that does away with most of the complexity associated with traditional enterprise apps.
The executive notes that ServiceNow’s app publishing tool is another major selling point. Apps and capabilities that are released to the Service Catalog, an internal app store of sorts, are optimized for mobile devices, web browsers and desktops from the get go.
ServiceNow’s enterprise customers are not the only ones taking advantage of its technology. Schvimmer describes how the company’s many partners develop their own apps, go through a certification process, and roll out the software to their clients’ environments.
