HBO GO Lands on Apple TV : Here’s What You Need to Know

If you’re a Game of Thrones fan and missed watching the brutal Red Wedding episode and the finale of Season 3, and you have an Apple TV, it’s not too late to catch up.

Apple has announced that it will be adding five new content providers to Apple TV to deliver more programming to its audience.

The two new big additions are HBO GO and WatchESPN, which means that HBO original series such as Game of Thrones and True Blood can now be accessed by Apple TV users, provided that they have an HBO subscription.

As for WatchESPN, sports fans with live access to ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPN3 and ESPN Buzzer Beater/Goal Line to those who receive ESPN’s networks as part of their video subscription from affiliated providers. Popular sports and fan-favorite shows include college football and basketball, Monday Night Football, MLB, NBA, major golf tournaments, all four Grand Slam tennis events, SportsCenter, PTI and more.

“HBO GO and WatchESPN are some of the most popular iOS apps and are sure to be huge hits on Apple TV,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services. “We continue to offer Apple TV users great new programming options, combined with access to all of the incredible content they can purchase from the iTunes Store.”

Aside from HBO GO and WatchESPN, Sky News, Crunchyroll and Qello are all on board which means users of the $99 Apple set-top box can enjoy 24/7 news feed (available in US, UK and Ireland), as well as Japanese Anime and Asian media, and HD concerts and music documentaries.

HBO GO – Read First!

Before downloading HBO GO on your Apple TV, there are few things you need to know before you proceed.

  • You need an HBO subscription.
  • HBO GO is only available in the fifty states of the US and Hong Kong.
  • HBO GO is available on Verizon FIOS, AT&T U-verse, Google TV, Cox Communications, Comcast, Time Warner Cable, DirecTV, Dish Network, Suddenlink Communications, Charter Communications, Xbox Live, Time Warner Cable, Apple TV
  • Available as an iOS, Android app but won’t work if you don’t have an HBO subscription.

In a nutshell, the only way for you to stream HBO GO content is if you live in the US or in Hong Kong.  If not, you can just wait for the episodes of your favorite HBO original content to become available on iTune, on DVD, or resort to piracy since the content gets release months to almost a year after the season aired.

So before you go curse and start throwing things at your Apple TV for not having HBO GO, make sure you comply with all the requirements first.  After all, a small black box is defenseless against your wrath.
