Cisco Live Touts SDN + Internet of Things : Blue Sky Marketing?
Cisco Live 2013 has wrapped up and there were a few exciting announcements made.
Cisco announced that within the next 12 months, it will support software-defined networking across its entire portfolio starting from its two new routers, the ISR 4451-AX which is a high-performance branch platform that offers up to 2Gbps of forward performance with native WAN optimization and will be released immediately, and the ASR 1000-AX WAN, an edge router that integrates Application Visibility and Control and AppNav capabilities with virtual wide area application services, will be released next month and will both be made compatible with Cisco’s Open Network Environment (ONE) architecture in the first quarter of 2014.
Cisco also announced new and upgrades to its Catalyst line such as the Catalyst 6800 Switch Series which will be available in November 2013.
Then there was the unveiling of the company’s new spin-in, Insieme Networks, a zero touch provisioning for Dynamic Fabric Automation, aimed to help the company differentiate a new product from the merchant silicon crowd. Though many were disappointed with the details provided about the new service, as Cisco’s chief technology and strategy officer Padmasree Warrior sidestepped the specifics of Insieme. At least its customers have something to look forward to in the future.
So what is Cisco’s vision of the future?
Joining Kristin Feledy in this morning’s NewsDesk is Wikibon Senior Analyst Stu Miniman to give his Breaking Analysis.
“Over 20,000 true believers in the ‘Cisco Certified Army’ come in to hear Cisco’s vision of the future. It’s not just the Internet of Things, Cisco’s actually talking about the Internet of Everything – it’s your centers, it’s your mobile, it’s all these devices that are going to pull machine data into the environment,” Miniman explains.
“Of course networking is incorporated to be able to put that data around, and Cisco talked about the vision on how they extend things like their Catalyst line, which is the top-selling internet switch out there today. They talked about things like SDN , talked about the future with application-aware infrastructure… Cisco does a nice job of giving this compelling future of where they’re going to bring customers,” Miniman goes on.
“One of the things that I and some others are so critical of is that it’s great to have that ‘Blue Sky’ marketing but people want to be able to understand, ‘What can I buy today? How do I get to that future?’, not just that you have a great vision to bring us to the future,” Miniman stated.
