Hadoop Grows Up : Big Data No Longer Limited to Web Scale Companies

Wikibon Principal Research Contributor Jeff Kelly has been on the road with theCUBE jumping from one event to another, including SAP Sapphire, HP Discover, GE Industrial Internet, MongoNYC and Hadoop Summit, all in an effort to separate the signal from the noise within the booming Big Data industry, particularly the rising prominence of Hadoop.

Kelly notes that in the events that he and theCUBE team covered, Big Data seems to be the growing theme. He states that the industry is now starting to see prduction deployments of Big Data, and Big Data technology itself, such as Hadoop, is maturing.  Big Data in general is starting to “grow up.”

Big Data no longer limited to web scale companies

For Kelly, the biggest takeaway during theCUBE’s Spring Tour is that Big Data is being utilized in real world use cases, and are no longer confined to web scale companies.

During the Hadoop Summit, they were able to speak with representatives from the Children’s Hospital in Los Angeles who deployed Hadoop to bring in all sorts of research related data, machine data from medical devices and medical equipment, and using some analytics tool to better inform its research team to test hypothesis or to unleash insights hidden in all the data gathered.

“That’s an example of an industry – Healthcare.  There’s tons of potentials in Big Data, but we’ve been talking for the last couple of years how it’s just that, mostly potential.  But here’s an example of a hospital that’s really deploying this i production.  Having spoken with some of their engineers, they’re looking to play this out to actually put an application on top of Hadoop for their clinicians, doctors and nurses.  So they’re really starting to take this to the next level,” Kelly explained.

He also noted how the NBA is using predictability technologies, and in turn making that available to their fans so they can search for team or player statistics, team scores by year, and also compare historic and current stats.
