Best Windows 8 Apps of 2013 (So Far)

Microsoft is catching up to Apple and Google in the mobile scene, as Windows just surpassed the 100,000 app milestone in time for the BUILD conference.  Aside from that, Windows 8 is gaining traction as users anticipate the release of Windows 8.1.

Though the Windows Store has more than 100,000 apps to offer to its users, it’s still missing some key apps to make its Surface tablets more appealing to consumers.  Nevertheless, there are some good apps already available for Windows 8 users.  Check them out:

Games

 

Angry Birds Star Wars

Who doesn’t like flinging birds at goofy looking pigs?  This is why Rovio’s Angry Birds franchise is a success.  It’s a great way to blow off some steam or just pass time.  Add dressing those angry winged creatures as George Lucas’ famous Star wars characters, people will not think twice to pay $3.49 for it.

Jetpack Joyride

Play as Barry Steakfries in this adventure game with your goal being to breaks into a secret laboratory to commandeer the experimental jetpacks from the clutches of science evildoers.  If you like Jimmy Neutron and Megaman, you’d love this game as Barry looks like Neutron, and the gameplay is reminiscent of playing Megaman.

4 Elements II Special Edition

This Windows 8 Special Edition of the the popular puzzle and hidden objects game will entrance anyone who plays it with its fascinating story, gorgeous art and backgrounds.  Available for $2.99.

Skype

Staying in contact with your Skype or Facebook friends is easy with this Windows 8 app.  It’s not surprising that Skype has a Windows 8 app since it’s Microsoft owned, and because of this fact, the app looks great on the platform.

Twitter

Nothing is really special with the Twitter app, it’s just like what use in the web or on other platforms.  It’s a quick way for people to tell everyone what they’re thinking or what they’re up to.

Facebook Now

It’s Facebook for Windows 8 tablets.  It has full support for photo galleries, news feed, chat, messaging, events and more.

Entertainment

 

Xbox SmartGlass

This app lets you  use your Windows 8 device as a second screen to intelligently interact with your Xbox 360. It helps your devices work together to enhance your TV shows, movies, music, sports, and games. Control and interact with what’s on your TV with simple gestures on your Windows device.  This app is useless if you don’t have an Xbox 360 plus not all the features are available in all countries.

Netflix

You need a Netflix subscription for this app to be useful.  If you have one, you have unlimited access to TV shows and movies.  And if you start watching on your Windows 8 device, you can continue watching with your other devices.

Movie ShowTime

This app lets you know what movies are currently playing in theaters near you.  It even gives you information on the movie’s length, storyline, ratings and you can even watch the preview.

Books, magazines and Newspapers

 

NOOK – Books, Magazines, Newspapers

This app gives you acces to over 3 million NOOK books, including 1 million FREE books, as well as magazines, newspapers, and comics on your Windows 8 tablet and PC.  The app has been updated with  features such as sideload ePub and PDF files from the local file system, add notes to books, highlight words using multiple colors, find words or phrases in books, lookup word definitions in the dictionary, and type in your library or the shop to instantly search.

Audible – Audiobooks and more

No time to sit down to enjoy a good book?  Why not listen to it?  Audible allows you to catch up on your reading even if you’re doing other things like running an errand, doing household chores, driving and other daily activities.

Kindle

This app gives you access to over 1 million books in the Kindle Store and it comes with Amazon’s Whispersync technology that automatically syncs your furthest page read, bookmarks, notes, and highlights across all your devices that have the Kindle app installed and across any Kindle device.
