SmartWorld Weekly Roundup: From Zero Homes to Ad-laced Cars

If you missed any part in SiliconANGLE’s SmartWorld Series this week, fret not! Friday is the perfect day to catch up on your reading.

In this week’s SmartWorld roundup, we featured smarter homes producing more energy than they’re consuming, quantified self apps and gadgets, smart transportation, and a number of devices that are making life easier to document and track.

Smart Home Gets Sexy : From Zero to IPO

The first Zero Day residence, a house that is able to produce more energy than it actually consumes, has been recently “turned on” in Utah.  The best part about this automated and energy-efficient home is that it costs the same as a regular home, but will save you much more cash on your utility bills.

See Your Psycho Data, and Your Little Dog’s Too

One nifty lady has come up with a way to visualize her quantified self data, and it’s not your usual smartphone app.  Using electronic devices packed with sensors that are able to track movement, heart rate, temperature and other pertinent data, Rain Ashford was able to create cool accessories and fashionable clothing to not only give you pizzazz, but also to make sense of how your body works.

Ads in your Smart Cars, Bikes for Rent + More

Most cars on the streets have computer boxes that analyze the vehicle’s condition, often used by mechanics to diagnose car trouble.  Though it may seem like this little device only benefits drivers, Dash Labs has found a way to use a car’s on-board diagnostics system to deliver targeted ads. This way, local businesses can throw you real-time promos as you drive by.

The Most Successful Self-Starter Project + More Smart Devices

We always losing one thing or another.  Like our house keys, medication box or school notebooks, to name a few.  If only we could call out to these lost items, and they could tell us exactly where they are!  Good thing Tile, the tiny Bluetooth Low Energy device for keeping track of the small, or big items in life, was able to raise $2.6M in funds from 49,586 customers in just 34 days – which simply means that it’s a step closer to being becoming a consumer-ready product, available in the market.  The days of lost items playing hide-and-go-seek may soon be over.
