Amazon Gives Back to the Community with AWS Activate Bundle

Amazon Web Services got its start as a developer platform 2006, and quickly evolved as a force to be reckoned within the enterprise cloud arena. The infrastructure-as-a-service is now going back to its roots with new solutions for cash-strapped startups.

Announced this morning, the AWS Activate bundle comes in two editions: the generally available Self-Starter and the more exclusive Portfolio package, which can only be applied for by firms in select accelerator, incubator, venture capital seed funds or entrepreneur organizations.

“Many of the world’s most successful startups already build their businesses on the AWS cloud. Based on feedback from VCs, startups and entrepreneurs, we developed AWS Activate to help even more startup organizations get going quickly by leveraging AWS to help build their business. We’re happy to offer this to startups of all kinds from around the world today,” commented Adam Selipsky, the vice president of Amazon Web Services.

Self-Start includes the AWS Free Usage Tier, a plan that provides users with one year of free but limited access to certain services, and one month of “developer-level” support. Other benefits include the ability to tap the AWS Startup Forum for peer insights, special offers from third party companies, and hands-on cloud tutorials.

The Portfolio bundle adds credits for four self-paced tracks, an instructor-led course, expanded forum privileges and a wider selection of partner solutions. Most notably, it also features AWS credits that can be redeemed against fees for more than half a dozen services.

Earlier this month, machine data analytics giant Splunk unveiled a new AWS-based Big Data service aimed at cloud-savvy organizations. The offering is a full featured, subscription-based version of the company’s flagship Splunk Enterprise platform, which is deployed on-premise.
