Weekly Cloud Review: IT automation and virtualization
ServiceNow is doing its part to move the public cloud deeper into the traditional enterprise with an online ITSM platform that consolidates traditional IT silos into an easily manageable and highly automated single system of record. Last week the firm broadened its value proposition with a new tool that aims to change the way customers manage their data centers. Configuration Automation helps companies enforce governance policies by automatically initiating the relevant processes when an update is logged to the ServiceNow Configuration Management Database or requested via the Service Catalog. The tool provides advanced provisioning capabilities that enable users to ensure that changes are properly validated across their physical, virtual and cloud-based environments.
Configuration Automation is joined by three new apps for technology lifecycle, including a self-service password reset feature and a Vendor Performance Management dashboard that lets CIOs see how their vendors match up to the competition. The tool is complemented by Resource Management which, as the name suggests, provides visibility into cost savings opportunities.
While ServiceNow is busy revolutionizing IT organizations, VMware is trying to future-proof its business with analytics. The virtualization giant recently unveiled IT Business Management Suite 1.0 Standard, a Big Data platform that sheds led light on the overhead of technology infrastructure. The Advanced and Enterprise editions feature “persona-based dashboards” that can be targeted to specific roles. The software is joined by new versions of vCenter Operations Management and vCenter Administration Center that introduce enhanced cloud monitoring and expanded DevOps support, respectively.
HP is keeping pace with a new appliance for virtualized environments. Announced this week at the company’s Discover event, ConvergedSystem for Virtualization can power up to 1000 VMs and costs 25 percent less than rivaling products. The box made its debut alongside ConvergedSystem 300 for Vertica and a VDI solution capable of delivering up to six times faster graphics performance than alternatives.
