Move over Google Glass, the MetaPro is out to get you

Most people will agree that Google Glass is a pretty awesome looking device that’s capable of doing some amazing things, even more so when its new wink function goes live. But those same people will always want something better. So how about a smartglass that doesn’t need to be paired with a smartphone to get the best out of it? Or a smartglass that will allow you to interact with 3D images you see on the screen? How about both?

Meet the MetaPro

Google Glass might just have a serious competitor on its hands. The MetaPro is a pair of sleek smartglasses that uses both lenses to project augmented reality images right before your eyes. Wearing this device, you won’t have to settle at looking through a small cube to see if you’ve got a message. With MetaPro, the world is literally your playground as it can project zombies in your living room. Think of MetaPro as a fusion between the Oculus Rift and Google Glass.

Meta is “way, way, way, way more hardcore than any other wearable computer out there right now,” CEO Meron Gribetz said in an interview.  “We’re the entertainment media consumption gaming wearable computer, whereas Glass is something else.”

The components

MetaPro uses dual immersive transparent displays made up of premium quality Carl Zeiss lenses with a 40º field of view and 3D HD display. Both lenses have a resolution of 1280×720 pixels. It has a 9-axis motion tracking which includes an accelerometer, gyroscope, and compass. It also features digitally precise 3D surround sound, a miniature HD camera,  real-time depth camera, and time-of-flight 3D sensor.

It comes with a Meta Pro Pocket Computer that’s equipped with an Intel i5 CPU, 4GB RAM, 128GB SSD, and 32Whr battery. The glasses connect to the pocket computer via a cable, but it also has Bluetooth 4.0 and WiFi 802.11b/g/n connectivity to connect with your smartphone or laptop.

The Meta App Store already has 500+ augmented reality apps, and many more are expected to come as developer interest in the device grows. Meta has an upvote-based pitch system wherein developers submit their ideas to the community. The community then votes the most appealing ideas up – and the most popular idea will be the first to get the Meta dev kits. Gribetz  states that tight now, there is a huge demand for tabletop gaming.

The MetaPro is priced at $3,000 and is expected to arrive by June 2014.

The main goal of Gribetz is to replace computers with Meta.

“It’s a very grand project. We’re purporting to become the replacement for phones and computers in the not-too-long run,” Gribetz says. “We replace the keyboard and mouse… We want people to wear this as much as they use phones and tablets.”
