Single managed entities can save 53% over traditional infrastructure

Oracle_SME_cost_savingsLicensing the Oracle Supercluster running the Oracle E-Business Suite as a single managed entity (SME) can save companies up to 53% of the total cost over the traditional approach of buying piece-parts, writes Wikibon CTO and Co-Founder David Floyer in “Case Study: Oracle E-Business Suite and SuperCluster Reach for Single Managed Entity.”

This essentially creates an internal Application-as-a-Service structure that duplicates the savings and application flexibility provided by an equivalent public cloud service while keeping the data close to other internal applications that share that data. It provides earlier realization of productivity or revenue improvements, higher availability and reduced risk. This result can be generalized to other applications and underlying infrastructure.

Wikibon believes that most internal IT infrastructure, data and applications will migrate to data mega-datacenters over the next decade for several reasons. By first moving critical applications to SME infrastructure, CIOs can plan the migration of groups of applications that share data to the appropriate mega-datacenter when that makes business sense, rather than moving them piecemeal as a reaction to budgetary and internal political pressures.

Floyer concludes that the SME approach for mission-critical core applications is a “significant step away from the current high maintenance model…. New application-centric Dev/Ops and Coud/Ops models will allow the enterprise IT organization to be application- and business-focused and reduce the time for IT to support change.”
