Cyber Monday spending up with big growth in mobile

cybermondayIBM and comScore Inc. have released their annual reports on Cyber Monday, both stating that spending is up this year, with a big increase in mobile device ordering.

The IBM study found that online sales on Cyber Monday grew 8.5 percent compared to 2013, with mobile sales up 27.6 percent year-over-year. New York City remains the top city for online shopping, retaining the position for both Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

Cyber Monday mobile traffic accounted for 41.2 percent of all online traffic, up 30.1% over 2013.  Mobile sales also proved a solid sales medium, with 22 percent of all Cyber Monday online sales.

Deeper into the stats, smartphones drove 28.5 percent of all Cyber Monday online traffic, double that of tablets, which delivered 12.5 percent of traffic.

Where it gets interesting is that tablets users are more likely to buy than mobile users, with tablets delivering 12.9 percent of online sales compared to 9.1 percent for smart phones. Tablet users also spend more, averaging $121.49 per order compared to $99.61 for smartphone users.

comScore’s stats were more upbeat, claiming that spending on Cyber Monday is up 17% to a new record of $2.038 billion.

“With more than $2 billion in online buying on Cyber Monday to cap an exceptionally strong 5-day period since Thanksgiving, the online holiday shopping season is clearly going very well at the moment and is currently running ahead of forecast,” comScore’s Chairman Emeritus Gian Fulgoni said in a statement. “Any notion that Cyber Monday is declining in importance is really unfounded, as it continues to post new historical highs and reflects the ongoing strength of online this holiday season.
