Laptop, tablet and phone in one: the Dragonfly Futurefon
Ideal Lab Inc. is currently pitching its Dragonfly Futurefon on Indiegogo Inc.’s crowdfunding platform, an all-in-one device that is rather impressive.
The Dragonfly combines a laptop, tablet and phone in one device, complete with two screens, a decently sized keyboard, a pop-out trackpad, built-in stylus, built-in tablet stand and USB ports. And it comes in two flavors: Android or Windows.
According to the company, “The Dragonfly represents the next logical step in computing evolution. It provides an elegance and balance that has been sorely missing in mobile computing and finally allows you to have the tools, toys and technology you want in one compact transforming, compromise-free device. The Dragonfly harmoniously removes the clutter, confusion, chaos and cost associated with having to buy and maintain multiple, separate devices.”
The various parts include:
- Two 7-inch Super AMOLED 2560 x 1440 screens; one screen is the main screen while the secondary screen called a “Slingshot” is a detachable Android phablet that can be used as a phone or tablet
- 4G LTE support for fast Internet
- “Cliq covers,” which are both covers that allow you to modify the look of the device, and there is one type (the “Smart Cliq”) that sports LED notification lights and a 1.5-inch screen for notification
- Android 5.0 or Windows 8.1 (eventually Windows 10). Android runs on both screens; Windows runs on the main screen while the “Slingshot” continues to run Android.
The Dragonfly doesn’t scrimp on hardware either.
Android only version:
- Android 5.0 Lollipop
- 2.5GHz quad core Krait 400 CPU
- Adreno 330 GPU
- Two batteries
- 3GB RAM
- 16/32/64 GB on board storage with a micro SD card slot
Windows/ Android version:
- As above
- Intel I7 3537U at 2.0Ghz
- 4GB RAM upgradable to 8GB
The various parts all fold up into something similar to an oversized, fat wallet. The official dimensions are 4.25 inches deep (107.95 mm) by 6.125 inches (155.575 mm) by 0.95 inches (24.13 mm) thin and weighs 15.95 ounces (452.175 g), too big for a pocket perhaps, but for all on offer a small size.
The idea is impressive, but you don’t have to take our word for it: The Indiegogo campaign is currently up to $531,871 at the time of this writing, with 16 days to go.
The Dragonfly Futurefon will sell for $799; however, via the Indiegogo campaign the Windows version is currently available on pre-order for $400. The delivery date was not specified.
