Wikibon forecasts Hadoop-NoSQL market to hit $3 billion by 2017

Cloud Database NoSqlThe combined Hadoop-NoSQL market will exceed $3 billion in revenues in 2017 predicts Wikibon’s “Hadoop-NoSQL Software and Services Forecast, 2013-2017”. What’s driving growth is a major shift away from traditional relational databases such as Oracle and Teradata to Hadoop-based technologies, often used with NoSQL databases, writes Wikibon Big Data lead analyst Jeff Kelly. Recent evidence that this shift is already underway includes Oracle’s recent disappointing database licensing performance and Teradata Corp.’s loss of more than $6 billion in market capitalization over the last three years.

Meanwhile, the Hadoop market, including distribution, support subscriptions and related professional services, has grown to $621 million in 2014 as companies gain experience with trials, often using pure Apache Hadoop. As those trials move into production the Hadoop market is expected to triple to close to $1.7 billion by 2017.

Companies often pair Hadoop with NoSQL databases from companies such as MarkLogic Corp., Aerospike, Inc and MongoDB, which eschew relational structure for greater flexibility. While this market is immature at the moment, it’s expected to grow quickly from $411 million in 2014 to to $1.5 billion by 2017 as Big Data becomes mainstream.

Cost, performance and agility and the principal drivers. The Hadoop market has been hampered by the immaturity of the technology and the lack of skilled programmers and administrators. However, as these issues are resolved and more products based on Big Data technologies enter the market, many companies are poised to create production systems in 2015.
